What is Adult Education & Faith Formation?
Why is it for you?

(from the Archdiocese of Atlanta)

 “The Church's catechetical mission aims to help the faithful of all ages to grow in both human and Christian maturity, enriching the whole of life with the leaven of the Gospel. Consequently, appropriate goals and content will embrace all the faith dimensions of an adult life—for example, understanding and communicating the faith, skills needed for personal growth, the experience of family life, relationships, public service, and concern for the common good.”

Three major goals guide and direct efforts in adult faith formation: 
1. Invite and Enable Ongoing Conversion to Jesus in Holiness of Life.
2. Promote and Support Active Membership in the Christian Community.
3. Call and Prepare Adults to Act as Disciples in Mission to the World.  

We have been challenged by this mission statement.  Join us on our in "Our Great Journey" in Faith and let us know how we are doing and how we can better serve you in the future.

Women of the Torah by Stephen Binz

Ancient-Future Bible Study incorporates contemporary study of the Bible with an experience of the church's most ancient way of reading Scripture, lectio divina. This time honored practice consists of five basic movements: biblical study (lectio), reflection (meditatio), prayer (oratio), discernment (contemplatio), and contemplative action (operatio). In six clearly written volumes, bestselling author Stephen Binz helps readers study the Bible in a way that leads to spiritual transformation and brings them closer to God. Binz leads readers in a vivid study of key biblical characters, including Abraham, Paul, Peter, David, the women of the Torah, and the women of the Gospels. He shows all Christians who desire to have a transforming experience with the inspired Word of God how studying Scripture through lectio divina can enrich their discipleship. Seniors Spirituality: The Book of Revelation:  The Lamb and the Beasts

Revelation may not be what you think!  Stephen Binz states "The Book of Revelation is not about what the future holds, but about who holds the future. It lays out contrasting visions of the world: the world of the Lamb and the world of the beasts, and expresses the magnitude of our choice with inspired imagery. "   The enduring message of Revelation, according to the NABRE, is "a message of hope and consolation and challenge for all who dare to believe" in Christ the victor. 

About Senior Spirituality

Are you 50 or older? Join our "motley" group of seniors for fellowship and study of our Catholic faith. We open our meetings with a discussion on Fr. Fernando's Sunday reflection and homily. Then we delve into the "meat and potatoes" of our study. We never know what side topics on our Catholic faith and teachings will surface. We guarantee you that our discussion is lively, varied and interesting.  The study material is provided.

 After the expansion of Homeboy Industries, Boyle returns with Barking to the Choir to reveal how com­passion is transforming the lives of gang members. In a nation deeply divided and plagued by poverty and violence, Barking to the Choir offers a snapshot into the challenges and joys of life on the margins. 

Read the book in class with others and experience the stories together. Chapters are followed by discussions, and sometimes tissues.  Please feel free to join any time.

Pathfinders

Jeremiah - a Little Rock Scripture Study

NEW! Begins January 9.

This study has 11 sessions. The study set includes the Study Guide by Clifford M. Yeary and Collegeville Bible Commentary Volume 14: Jeremiah, Baruch by Pauline A. Viviano. With the exile of many in Judah on the horizon, the prophet Jeremiah spoke on God's behalf using words and symbolic actions to condemn the idolatry that was rampant in Judah. His prophetic ministry was deeply misunderstood and his subsequent arrest was the source of personal anguish for this prophet who also announced a new covenant to be written on the hearts of God's people. Pauline A. Viviano is an associate professor of theology at Loyola University Chicago. She received her doctorate in biblical languages and literature from St. Louis University. Besides articles in academic and popular journals her publications include reading guides for the books of Joshua Judges First and Second Samuel First and Second Kings and Ruth for the Catholic Study Bible published by Oxford University Press and Collegeville Bible Commentary Volume 2: Genesis (Liturgical Press 1985). In addition to university teaching she often lectures at parishes in and around Chicago.

Centering Prayer: Renewing an Ancient Christian Prayer Form by M, Basil Pennington OCSO

The practice of prayer and meditation in modern Western Christianity is rooted in the Eastern tradition of early Church prayer as well as the wisdom of early Church fathers. In Centering Prayer, M. Basil Pennington, the author of the highly acclaimed Daily We Touch Him, returns to these roots, offering contemporary Christians a new approach to ancient prayer forms. Pennington combines the best of the Eastern spiritual exercises (such as the Jesus Prayer) with a spirituality for today's world.

Addressing the obstacles that discourage people from praying well, he explains how to relax for prayer, how to listen to and be directed by the Other, and how to handle the pain and distractions that can stifle attempts to communicate with God.

Centering Prayer has sold more than a quarter million copies since it was first published in 1982. In this eminently practical book, simple, inspiring instructions will help readers find the comfort and the guidance they seek through prayer.

Scripture Study: The Gospel of John

Women in Faith begins at 9:45 a.m. in Bishop Hall with opportunity for prayer, reflection and fellowship with our larger group.  We then break into our groups of studies. 

This winter/spring we will offer 6 studies from which to choose:

  • SUNDAY SCRIPTURE
    Reflecting on Sunday's Readings (Scriptures) is a small-group Bible study on the Sunday Mass readings. The study introduces participants to small-group discussion materials based on the Scripture passages used in the upcoming Sunday's Mass. Each weekly study provides an introductory reflection on some aspect of the readings or on personal spirituality. Each passage is printed along with a few questions designed to engage the heart and stimulate discussion.

  • SEARCHING FOR AND MAINTAINING PEACE: A SMALL TREATISE ON PEACE OF HEART by Fr. Jaques Philippe
    We live in an age characterized by agitation and lack of peace. This tendency manifests itself in our spiritual as well as our secular life. In our search for God and holiness, in our service to our neighbor, a kind of restlessness and anxiety take the place of the confidence and peace which ought to be ours. What must we do to overcome the moments of fear and distress which assail us? How can we learn to place all our confidence in God and abandon ourselves into his loving care? This is what is taught in this simple, yet profound little treatise on peace of head. Taking concrete examples from our everyday life, the author invites us to respond in a Gospel fashion to the upsetting situations we must all confront.   • REDISCOVER THE SAINTS by Matthew Kelly
    We are capable of so much more than we think. You have no idea what you are capable of. None of us do. God is constantly trying to open our eyes to the amazing possibilities that he has enfolded in our being. The saints continue this work, encouraging us to explore all our God-given potential, not with speeches but with the example of their lives. When we have the courage to collaborate with God and pursue our truest self, he lights a fire within us that is so bright and warm, it keeps shining long after our days on this earth have come to an end. The lives of the saints have captivated the people of every age for this very reason. There are two questions that confront the people of every place and time, questions that confront you and me today: Are you satisfied with the direction the world is moving in? Are you satisfied with your life? These questions are always before us, within us, around us. They are part of our spiritual quest and part of our human quest. These questions linger in our minds when we read the news of happenings in our own country and around the world. They tickle our souls when we witness the battle between good and evil, however it manifests in our own lives. Are you satisfied with the direction the world is moving in? This is one of life's inescapable questions, and we each respond with passionate action or selfish indifference. Our collective dissatisfaction with the direction of the world leads to the consensus that the world needs changing. And yet, we seem gripped by exasperation and paralyzed by the false belief that we can't do anything about it. The saints dispel that exasperation and inspire us to bold action. They remind us over and over again: We can change the world.

  • MISERICORDIA- a "BLESSED IS SHE" Conversation study
    MISERICORDIA means “mercy” in Latin. This is a quarter-long (three-month) deep dive study on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy and modern lay holy women, split among four authors. This study is going to be Reflective and Motivating. It covers the Corporal and Spiritual Acts of Mercy. A basics of Catholic life. If you are curious or if you are not very familiar with the idea - this study will teach you, expand you, allow you to seek new ways of acting in your life and how your life can impact the lives of the people around you. During Lent, this study will help you along your Journey. In class you will read & discuss, and also have the chance to reflect and journal! You'll take those opportunities home with you to prompt your journaling, prayer time, and give you a weekly check in with your Lenten Journey. No book required. Facilitators will have the materials available for reading and working In Class, week to week. HOWEVER! The study is available for you to purchase as a book or a digital download. Catholic Social Teaching advocated an integral Christian humanism seeking to protect basic human dignity in all its manifestations.  We are called to protect the dignity of the child in the womb, the dignity of the mother with child, as well as the dignity of all children (and indeed all people) born into the world.  What does this mean in relation to legislation such as the "heartbeat bill," the detention of immigrant children, and the pervasive abject poverty and violence in the world?  Amy will facilitate this important discussion relating to key tensions and potential solutions.

Most of us can identify racial injustice when it is demonstrated by the spoken word. These situations are obvious and overt. Do we recognize the challenges associated with the subtle and insidious racial bias found in some institutions of this country? We learned from the Care of the Earth presentation the hope we as Catholics can be and the standards our Pope has put before us in his encyclical Laudato Sí.  But, what can we do at a local level?  How about here at Transfiguration?  Can we have a positive affect by making a few changes in our homes?  The information can be overwhelming.  Join Karen as she breaks down resources and programs available in our community, what WE can do and what YOU may already be doing. We look forward to an engaging discussion and hope you will be a part in it.

Holy Name Society

Holy Name hosts a full Breakfast Buffet and brings in Guest Speakers to talk on various topics of interest in and around the Catholic Church. Tickets go on sale two weekends before the event after all mass times and are available through the front office as well. Check the schedule below and mark your calendars.
