Women in Faith Spring 2024

Dearest Sisters in Christ,

We are so excited to be together once again as we start off this new year with a Meet and Greet on January 12 at 9:45 am in the Social Hall. On January 19 at 9:45, we will offer a Morning of Reflection by Ruth Elsbree, titled Encountering Jesus with Martha and Mary.  Ruth will also offer the reflection for the Monday night group on January 22, 7:00 p.m.. Small group studies begin on  January 26. Many of our ladies attend the 9:00 am Mass and/or Rosary prior to WIF; please feel free to join us if you are able.

Below are the study options for this Spring. Click on each option for a description of the study, then click the link under the description for more information. Please keep in mind that large groups signed up for one study may be split into two groups and groups fewer than five may need to choose a different study.

1. What Would Monica Do? by Patti Armstrong and Roxane Salonern

Hope and healing for those with a loved one who has left the Faith. St. Monica was the loving mother of St. Augustine, Catholic theologian and Doctor of the Church.
While St. Augustine became one of the most influential theologians of the Catholic Faith, he spent a period of time running from God. During this period, his mother prayed continuously for his conversion. God answered her prayers!
In What Would Monica Do?, two mothers, authors, and lovers of St. Monica offer guidance, practical advice, and prayers for navigating the difficulty of losing a loved one to the world through their reflections on St. Monica.

2. Angels of God by Stephen Binz

This study enhances today’s fascination with angels with an overview of the Bible’s presentation of God’s angels as guardians and messengers. Understanding their presence throughout biblical history will enhance your awareness of their invisible presence with us today. Threshold Bible Study is a thematic Scripture series designed for both personal study and group discussion. The thirty lessons in each study may be used by an individual for daily study over the course of a month or they may be divided into six weekly lessons. Through the spiritual disciplines of Scripture reading, study, reflection, conversation, and prayer, readers will cross the threshold to a more abundant dwelling with God. Ideal for Bible study groups, small Christian communities, parish leadership teams, adult faith formation, student Scripture-study groups, OCIA teams, catechumens and candidates, catechists and teachers.

3. People of the Passion: Threshold Bible Study by Stephen Binz

Suffering seems to bring out the best and the worst in our human nature. Some people are overcome with hopelessness that leads to despair; others are filled with courage that leads to heroism. Still others exhibit a wide range of responses that reveal their character: trust, generosity, steadfastness, cowardice, greed, and pride. The people of the passion in this book are the characters who participated in some dramatic way in the suffering and death of Jesus. Well-known characters include Peter, Pilate, and Mary Magdalen, Simon of Cyrene, the daughters of Jerusalem, and the woman who anointed Jesus.

4. Living in the Father’s Love by Lisa Brenninkmeyer – Walking with Purpose Series

In a world where women are measured by their beauty, achievements, and possessions, wouldn’t it be nice to find a place where you could just be valued for who you are?

Living in the Father’s Love: A Study of God the Father will lead you to that safe place where you are unconditionally loved, baggage and all. This brief but powerful six-lesson Bible study from Walking with Purpose is the ideal way to revive and refresh yourself. Discover just how much God loves us and how the Gospels are deeply relevant to our relationship with God and with those we love.

Living in the Father’s Love is perfect for the season of Advent or Lent. A series of video talks accompany this Bible study. Links to watch the online videos are included in the book.

5. The Red Tent – Anita Diamant

In the Bible, Dinah’s life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that tell of her father, Jacob, and his twelve sons.
The Red Tent begins with the story of the mothers–Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah–the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through childhood, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah’s story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past.
Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling and the valuable achievement of presenting a new view of biblical women’s lives.

6. The Lambs Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth by Scott Hahn

Of all things Catholic, there is nothing that is so familiar as the Mass. With its unchanging prayers, the Mass fits Catholics like their favorite clothes. Yet most Catholics sitting in the pews on Sundays fail to see the powerful supernatural drama that enfolds them. Pope John Paul II described the Mass as “Heaven on Earth,” explaining that what “we celebrate on Earth is a mysterious participation in the heavenly liturgy.”

Please note, hardback version is less expensive than paperback.

7. From Worry to Wonder: A Catholic Guide to Finding Peace Through Scripture by Melissa Overmyer

Even though Catholics know God is all-powerful, worries and negative thoughts can still threaten one’s peace of mind. In From Worry to Wonder: A Catholic Guide to Finding Peace Through Scripture, Melissa Overmyer offers inspiration and practical tips to remember God’s love and power, no matter the circumstances.
Steeped in Scripture, From Worry to Wonder will help Catholics look to the timeless guidance of God’s Word to let go of worry and embrace awe in the Lord. Melissa Overmyer offers 7 steps to help Catholics bring about their own transformation from worry to wonder and place their trust in God.

8. Falling Upward by Richard Rohr – 1st Edition

In Falling Upward, Fr. Richard Rohr seeks to help readers understand the tasks of the two halves of life and to show them that those who have fallen, failed, or “gone down” are the only ones who understand “up.” Most of us tend to think of the second half of life as largely about getting old, dealing with health issues, and letting go of life, but the whole thesis of this book is exactly the opposite. What looks like falling down can largely be experienced as “falling upward.” In fact, it is not a loss but somehow actually a gain, as we have all seen with elders who have come to their fullness. This important book explores the counterintuitive message that we grow spiritually much more by doing wrong than by doing right–a fresh way of thinking about spirituality that grows throughout life.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU SELECT A HARDCOPY OF THE BOOK, THE HARDCOVER VERSION IS LESS EXPENSIVE THAN THE PAPERBACK.  THERE IS A NEW VERSION WHICH IS MORE EXPENSIVE BUT IS NOT NECESSARY FOR THIS GROUP UNLESS YOU WISH TO ORDER IT.
